Reverse Mortgages
How Long Do Heirs Have to Sell a Home With a Reverse Mortgage?
Generally, the servicer allows roughly six months after the last borrower's death to repay the loan or sell the home, and extensions of additional time are commonly available, often up to a year total, when the heirs are actively marketing and selling the property. The key is to stay in communication and show genuine progress.
To protect this timeline, notify the servicer of the death, request the payoff figure, and get the home listed promptly. Probate can run alongside this, but you do not want the reverse-mortgage clock to run out while waiting, since the lender can move toward foreclosure once deadlines pass without action. We have guided families through reverse-mortgage sales against these deadlines and know how to document active marketing to secure extensions when needed.
